What Are the Causes of Drug and Alcohol Addiction

What Causes a Drug and Alcohol Addiction

By Jennifer McDougall

You may have had a childhood trauma that was incredibly painful, either physically or emotionally, such as sexual assault, the death of a parent or close friend, or the loss of an opportunity, and you have buried the occurrence because it was so terrible. Or perhaps you remember it and have been unable to let go of the memories. The pain is still there, whether you’re aware of it or not. Certain occurrences bring back the emotions you had at the time.

Depression, anxiety, frustration, discomfort, and anger are symptoms of unresolved sentiments. Thus, even if you don’t recall the original loss, you know the emotional anguish.

Sometimes, people consume drugs and alcohol to relieve the discomfort because the agony and frustration are severe enough and stay long enough. When the substance wears off, though, the source of the pain remains.

You are not to blame for your addiction. What you’re going through right now is not your fault.

You’ve been told that you’re to fault for your inability to quit, and you may even believe it. After all, many people addicted to drugs and alcohol have successfully quit. So why don’t you try it?

You are not responsible for your addiction since one or more of the Four Causes originated it and keeps it alive and active.

You have or are currently facing circumstances in your life that make it hard for you to quit. Maybe you have relapsed, probably several times, even if you went to therapy and stopped for a while.

We focus on treating the underlying problems leading you to use drugs and alcohol at Passages Malibu. This is accomplished via a fully personalized treatment program directed by therapists with extensive experience in treating the underlying reasons of addiction. We don’t use the 12 Step program because it promotes a counterproductive mentality to recovery and can lead to relapse. Our one-on-one holistic approach is significantly superior to the 12 Step program, and we provide cutting-edge services that will keep you involved and excited about your recovery. Instead of feeling weak during therapy, you will feel empowered.

We don’t consider you an addict or an alcoholic, and we don’t believe you have a disease. However, we’ve discovered that labels like “addict” and “alcoholic” deprive you of your authentic identity.

Passages is different from all other rehab centers in the world by our treatment philosophy. We prefer to empower you and treat your root issues rather than labeling you an addict and telling you that you have a disease.

If you abuse drugs or alcohol, you likely have at least one of these underlying issues, which must be treated to attain long-term sobriety. Please look at the four probable causes and see if you can determine which one you have (or if you have more than one).

  1. A Chemical Imbalance

2. Events of the past you have not reconciled

3. Current conditions you are having trouble coping with

4. Things you believe that aren’t true

Whether you’re aware of why you’re abusing drugs and alcohol or not, our therapists will work with you to find new and healthier methods to cope with the pain you’re in. Learning new ways to deal with challenging situations in your life can help you avoid relapse and stay focused and healthy throughout your recovery.

If you’ve gone to other treatment programs and had negative experiences, you should give Passages Malibu a try. The caliber of our treatment programs will astound you, just as it has for thousands of our clients.
